Περιγραφή

when I entered my new classroom, the teacher was writing the lesson plan on the whiteboard. She smiled warmly at me, which immediately made me feel more comfortable.
Throughout the morning, I sat quietly while the teacher was introducing me to the class, and everyone stared at me for a few seconds. During recess, I stood alone for a moment while the other children were playing football, but a friendly girl soon approached me and invited me to join them.
By the time the final bell rang, I was laughing with my new classmates and felt completely relieved. The day passed quickly, and I went home feeling eager to return the next day.

Ο συνδυασμός του Αορίστου Διαρκείας (Past Continuous - \(\text{was/were} + \text{-ing}\)) και του Αορίστου Απλού (Past Simple - \(\text{-ed}\) ή ανώμαλο) είναι πολύ συνηθισμένος στα Αγγλικά για να περιγράψουμε μια δράση που βρισκόταν σε εξέλιξη, όταν μια άλλη, πιο σύντομη δράση, τη διέκοψε. [1, 2]
1. Βασικοί Κανόνες
  • Past Continuous (Μεγάλη διάρκεια/Ιστορικό): Χρησιμοποιείται για την πράξη που ήταν σε εξέλιξη (φόντο).
  • Past Simple (Σύντομη διάρκεια/Διακοπή): Χρησιμοποιείται για την πράξη που διέκοψε την πρώτη. [1]
2. Χρήση με "When" και "While"
Λέξη [1, 2] Χρήση Παράδειγμα
When Ακολουθείται συνήθως από Past Simple (μικρή δράση). I was watching TV when the phone rang.
While Ακολουθείται συνήθως από Past Continuous (μεγάλη δράση). The phone rang while I was watching TV.
Σημαντικές Σημειώσεις:
  • Μπορούμε να ξεκινήσουμε την πρόταση με When ή While. Αν ξεκινήσουμε με αυτές, βάζουμε κόμμα (,) ενδιάμεσα.
  • While = ενώ / When = όταν.
3. Παραδείγματα (Συνδυασμός)
  • He was reading a book when I saw him. (Διάβαζε όταν τον είδα)
  • While I was doing my homework, my computer crashed. (Ενώ έκανα... το κομπιούτερ χάλασε)
  • When the guests arrived, Jane was cooking dinner. (Όταν έφτασαν... η Jane μαγείρευε)
  • While she was waiting for the train, she met an old friend. (Ενώ περίμενε... συνάντησε...) [1, 2]
4. Διαφορά με "When" (When + Simple Past)
Όταν χρησιμοποιούμε when και με τους δύο χρόνους σε Simple Past, δηλώνουμε ότι η μία δράση έγινε αμέσως μετά την άλλη (αλληλουχία), όχι διακοπή. [1]
  • When my father arrived, we looked at his photos. (Έφτασε και μετά κοιτάξαμε)
  • When my father arrived, we were looking at his photos. (Κοιτάζαμε ήδη όταν έφτασε)
