Unit 5, Lesson 15: Shakespeare in Love
In this lesson you are going to learn about William Shakespeare, the greatest English playwright, and why he is so significant. You are going to listen and read two of his most famous love sonnets and write one of your own. Finally, you are going to look into his most popular plays and learn what Shakespeare had to say about love.
The lesson consists of three parts:
1. Meet the Bard Himself
2. The Love Sonnets
3. The Love Couples
Each part can be done separately.
Length: 3 weeks
Estimated effort for each part: 90 minutes
1. Meet the Bard himself
Step one
You've heard about him but what do you really know about him?
In the following KWL chart write everything you know or think you know about William Shakespeare. It doesn't have to be right.
Discuss with your group and brainstorm what you already know about him.
And even though you may know enough about the man, I'm sure there are things you are still wondering about.
For example:
Was he married?
What was life like in his time?
Where did he get his ideas?
Were his plays really successful?
Why is he such a big deal?
Discuss with your group and brainstorm some things you would like to know about him.
Present your ideas and discuss with the whole class.
Step two
Visit the following sites to see if you were right about Shakespeare and find answers to your questions.
During your research did you find out that some of the things you thought you knew were incorrect?
Are there any questions you did not find any answers to?
Or maybe your research sparked new questions?
Team two:
Prepare a short presentation in google slides about England in Shakepeare's time.
Team four:
Prepare a quiz to challenge your classmates in kahoot or googleforms.
When you are ready, present your work and then upload it in our classroom blog.
Now go back to your KWL chart and write down all the new information you've learned about the Bard.
2. The Love Sonnets
Step one
Shakespeare wrote 37 plays and 154 sonnets.
What is a sonnet?
A sonnet is a poem with a special pattern. Watch the following video about Shakespeare's sonnets.
1. What is the main pattern and rhythm in a Shakesperean sonnet?
2. Why did Shakespeare love the iambic meter?
Step two
Shakespeare's sonnets are known by their first line or by a number.
You are going to listen to Sonnet 130: "My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun".
1. Complete the gaps with the missing words.
Listen to the poem and complete the gaps with the words given
Replace the underlined words or phrases with the ones given.
Use the following google doc to do it.
2. Do you hear the rhythm?
3. Can you find the words that rhyme?
4. Practice reading it aloud.
Now that you have a clearer idea of what the sonnet says, tell me:
1. How does Shakespeare describe his mistress?
2. What is the main idea of the poem?
Step three
You are going to listen to another sonnet by Shakespeare: Sonnet 18: "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?". You can find a transcript of the sonnet in the link below.
How different is Sonnet 130 from Sonnet 18?
Listen and discuss:
Step four
Now is the time for you to become a poet too!
Choose a subject and write your own poem using Shakespeare’s sonnet as a template.
Write your draft in the google doc template.
If you are having trouble to make your poem rhyme, use this rhyming tool: https://www.rhymer.com to help you.
When you are ready, prepare a video presentation:
1. Practice reading it with passion
2. Choose one or two images that inspire you in https://pixabay.com/el/ and https://unsplash.com/
3. Choose your music soundtrack in https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCht8qITGkBvXKsR1Byln-wA
4. Record your voice reading it (you can use audacity or a recording app in your mobile)
5. Combine all this into a video (use windows movie maker or an app of your choice).
3. The Love Couples
Step one
Shakespeare wrote 37 plays. Some of them were tragedies, some were comedies and some were history plays.
Can you guess the type of play by their title?
Step two
Regardless of genre, Shakespeare has created some unforgettable romantic relationships, from star-struck love affairs to marriages built on murder.
Visit the following links and complete a table with the relevant information.
Step three
Each team can choose their favourite Shakespearean couple.
Read and / or watch their story in the following synopses of Shakespeare's plays.
Now prepare a digital narration of your favourite couple's story.
Choose one of the following:
- the couple's facebook page in net/FB/home-page
- infographic of their story in https://venngage.com/
- a radio interview of the couple with audacity
- a comic strip with https://www.pixton.com/gr/
Congratulations! You are now an expert on Shakespearean love!
