Unit 5, Lesson 13: The Arts
In this lesson we are going to learn about famous artists and their work, and make our own gallery with our favourite paintings!
Step One
Visit the following very famous art galleries: Galleria Uffizi, Museu Picasso, Van Gogh Museum, The National Gallery. Browse through the paintings and choose one that you like the most.
Step Two
Give us some information about the painting:
- When was it painted?
- Who was the artist?
- What was his/her inspiration?
- Where can you see it?
- Why do you like it?
- How does it make you feel?
Example:
This is my favourite painting, "The Bedroom" by the Dutch artist Vincent Van Gogh, painted in 1888. You can find it in the The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
Van Gogh made this painting of his bedroom while he was in Arles, France. He prepared the room himself with simple furniture and with his own work on the wall.
Van Gogh's paintings are characterised by bold colours and dramatic brushwork. During his life he was not commercially successful, and his suicide at 37 came after years of mental illness, depression and poverty.
I like this painting because it is simple yet colourful. It makes me feel serene and relaxed. It reminds me of my grandmother's bedroom in her old stone house before it was demolished to make room for a modern block of flats.
Do the same and choose your favourite one.
Post your answers in this jamboard.
Step Three
Play the Mystery Game: Break the Code. A famous Van Gogh painting has been stolen. Can you help the police find the robber?
Step Four
Can’t get enough of Art? Try to recreate famous artworks with household items. Take a photo of your work and upload it in our padlet.
