These American brothers built on the work of others but also conducted their own research and hundreds of experiments to create a 'flying machine' that could really fly. On December 17th, 1903, the Wright brothers made the first successful manned flight of a heavier-than-air craft under its own power outside of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.
