In this lesson you will be introduced into the basics of art interpretation and explore the meanings conveyed through the colour palette of artworks.
1) Start by watching two short videos. You can watch them again and take notes if you wish:
You can also study this colour wheel of emotions:
2) In the next activity visit Google Arts and Culture: Learning to Look interactive guide to discover some basic elements of art interpretation. Scroll down to read the guide.
Explore the following links:
Google Arts and Culture: Colour Explorer
Google Arts and Culture: Colour Emotion
Search for paintings by colour and explore the different shades of meaning that colour conveys.
Choose a painting ( showing a person or some human activity) you would like to work on in the following activity.
3) Write a paragraph on Padlet describing the painting and the subject's feelings. Use suitable verbs, adjectives and adverbs in your description. Include a picture of the painting in your post (copy and post its link).
Example: Girl with a Pearl Earring
Girl with a Pearl Earring is Vermeer’s most famous painting. We can see a girl dressed in an exotic way, wearing an oriental turban and a large pearl earring in her ear. Ιn terms of colour, the girl is wearing a simple brownish-yellow top, which contrasts strongly with her bright white collar. Her blue and yellow turban gives the picture an exotic effect. The dark background is in contrast with her fair complexion, suggesting her innocence. I particularly like the way she turns her head over her shoulder looking at the viewer as if she is about to speak.
Post your paragraphs on this padlet:

The colours contrast with each other.
The colours complement each other.
Here you can use a variety of adjectives describing feelings and emotions, such as any of these:
POSITIVE: happy, excited, joyous, optimistic, calm, serene
NEGATIVE: angry, gloomy, nervous, moody, sad, cold
NEUTRAL / CONTEXT-SPECIFIC: nostalgic, sentimental, longing
x makes me feel y (x = who/what causes the emotion, y = adjective)
e.g. This painting makes me feel sad. Then add a simple explanation as to why that is: This painting makes me feel sad, because it’s very dark and gloomy. Or, you could be more positive, and say something like The painting makes me feel so calm and serene, because of the lovely moonlight.
