PRESENT PERFECT SIMPLE - PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS

A. The present Perfect Simple expresses:

     1. a recently completed action.

e.g. She has peeled some potatoes. ( the job is finished)

     2. a repeated action which is still going on or an action which began in the past and continues up to the present.

e.g. Mary has worked in this office for two months. (She is still working in this office)

               I haven't seen my mother-in-law since 10th of March.

     3. a past action whose time is not definite.

e.g. Helen has studied a lot. (When? We don't know.)

B. The Present Perfect Continuous expresses:

     1. a past action which has produced visible results in the present.

e.g. Mom has been peeling onions. That's why she has tears in her eyes. (tears-visible result)

     2. the duration of an action which started in the past and continues up to the present.

*this tense is used instead of Present Perfect Simple when we want to give emphasis that the action is in progress.

e.g. -I'm sorry I'm late. Have you been waiting long?

-Yeah! I've been standing here for two hours!!!

We have been living in Chalandri since 2001/ We have lived in Chalandri since 2001.

      3. annoyance (ενόχληση), irritation (θυμό), surprise or explanation.

e.g. What on earth have you been doing in the bathroom for so long?

Come on! You 've been talking on the phone all morning! That's enough!

NOTE:  FOR is used for a period of time. e.g. He has been studying for three hours.

SINCE is used for a (starting) point of time. e.g. He has been studying since 10 o'clock.

MIND THE DIFFERENCE!!!

HAVE-HAS BEEN TO/HAVE-HAS BEEN IN/ HAVE-HAS GONE TO

He has been to New York. (= He has come back.)

He has been in New York for 3 years. (= He lives there.)

He has gone to New York. (= He hasn't come back yet.)
