(G2062276) -  ΠΑΡΑΣΚΕΥΗ ΠΑΡΘΕΝΗ

Περιγραφή Μαθήματος

Time clauses: In order to introduce Time Clauses we use:

when                  after                                   as long as

as                       no sooner than                    whenever

before                 the sooner... the sooner       hardly....when

while                   till/until                              as soon as

immediately         by the time                         the moment/the minute(that)

by                       now that                             since

CAREFUL: We never use Future Tenses with Time Clauses. The rule of the sequence of tenses applies in Time Clauses. So, when the verb of the main clause is in Imperative or Future, the Time Clause verb is in the Present or the Present Perfect. If the verb of the main clause is in the Past or Past Perfect, the verb of the time clause is in the Past or Past Perfect.

EXAMPLES:

  TIME                                       MAIN CLAUSE                                        TIME CLAUSE

PRESENT/FUTURE                IMPERATIVE/FUTURE                             PRESENT/PRESENT PERFECT

e.g. I'll go and get the bread as soon as I've finished washing up.

Brush your teeth before you go to the dentist.

We'll buy a smaller house after our kids have left home.

PAST                                  PAST TENSE/PAST PERFECT                    PAST TENSE/PAST PERFECT

She left her job as a secretary as soon as she got married.

We had finished our homework by the time dad arrived.

NOTE: when + future  (question word): When will the Rolling Stones arrive?

when without future (time word): When I arrive, I'll let you know.
