EXERCISE 12, PAGE 58,.STEP 1: Write down 5 reasons why keeping animals in captivity is wrong.
Write your answer in your notebook
MODEL ANSWER FOR EXERCISE 12, STEP 1:
Reasons why keeping animals in captivity is wrong:
- Animals have a life of their own. They are not just means for human entertainment.
- Animals are more sensitive than we might think, so they do not like being restricted. Therefore, they may suffer from depression.
- Animals are more intelligent than we may think. They understand that they are being held captive and they suffer because of it. Furthermore, they may feel bored as they lack the stimuli of the natural world.
- Many kinds of animals respond extremely badly at being held captive.
- It is very difficult, sometimes even impossible, to replicate ana animal’s habitat. Most of the time there is simply not enough room or they feel lonely because there are no other animals of their own kind around.
- Some animals are very sociable and hate being separated from other animals of their kind. Captivity deprives them of their natural social structure and companionship.
- Most probably the training of animals in circuses involves cruelty.
STEP 2: Write down at least 2 advantages of keeping animals in captivity.
Write your answer in your notebook.
MODEL ANSWER FOR EXERCISE 12, STEP 2:
Advantages of keeping animals in captivity:
- Some endangered species may be protected from extinction by being kept in zoos.
- Animals live longer as they are protected from predators and are provided with health care {the refute (αντικρούω) for this argument being that the quality of their lives is poor}
EXERCISE 14, PAGE 59:
STEP 1: Look at the photographs in your book. They show animals in different conditions. Compare and contrast them. Note down some advantages and disadvantages to each animal's living conditions.

(Para 4) Summarize and/or state your opinion
MODEL ESSAY:
You have had a class discussion about video games. Now your teacher has asked you to write an essay discussing the pros and cons of children playing video games (120-180 words).
At one time people seemed to be against children playing video games. Lately, though, experts have taken a more positive view. So, what exactly are the advantages and disadvantages of computer games?
Without a doubt, playing video games offers certain benefits. To start with, youngsters develop logic and problem-solving skills. This means that they learn to overcome real life difficulties better, too. Furthermore, video games provide relief from stress. For example, if a child is sitting a difficult exam, playing a game afterwards can help them relax.
On the other hand, there are certain drawbacks to playing video games. First, video games are extremely addictive and time-consuming. As a result, players may neglect schoolwork, physical exercise or even forget to eat properly. In addition, some people claim there is too much violence in some video games. This can make players insensitive to the pain and suffering of others.
All in all, there are both advantages and disadvantages to playing computer games. I believe that video games can be entertaining and provide stress relief provided children enjoy them in moderation.

- make your points understandable.
- Make your points logical.
- Make your points real-be concrete and specific, give examples.
“Animal testing should be abolished.”
YES:
- Animal Suffering
- Millions of animals experience pain, stress, and death during experiments.
- It is cruel to harm animals for human benefit when alternatives exist.
- Animals and humans are not identical, so results on animals may not apply to humans.
- Drugs that are safe for animals sometimes fail in humans, wasting time and resources.
- Most experiments involving animals are flawed, wasting the lives of the animals involved.
- Medical breakthroughs involving animal research may still have been made.
- Animals have a right to live without being used as test subjects.
- People argue that it is morally wrong to treat animals as "tools" for experiments.
- Modern methods like computer simulations, 3D printing of tissues, and human cell cultures are becoming more accurate and reliable.
Companies and researchers already use these methods successfully
NO:
- Medical Advancements
- Animal testing has contributed to life-saving treatments and vaccines (e.g., for polio, cancer, and diabetes).
- Without testing, it would be hard to ensure the safety of new medicines for humans.
- Animals themselves benefit from the results of animal testing
- Animals like mice and monkeys have similar biological systems to humans, making them useful models for research.
- Testing on animals helps predict how drugs might work in people.
- Laws regulate animal testing to minimize suffering, scientists follow the "3Rs" (Replacement, Reduction, Refinement) principle. The goal of the 3R Principle is to avoid animal experiments altogether (Replacement), to limit the number of animals (Reduction) and their suffering (Refinement) in tests to an absolute minimum. The 3R Principle now provides a road map for laboratory animal protection policies of many countries.
- Technology like computer models and cell cultures cannot fully replace live organisms.
Some complex diseases, like Alzheimer’s, require whole-body systems for study
STEP 3: The debate will take place in class according to your teacher's instructions
STEP 4: ex.16, page 61, Animal testing opinion essay
You have taken part in a debate about animal testing experiments. Write an essay presenting your opinion on whether or not scientists should perform experiments on animals in order to test drugs/medicines and various medical procedures. (120-150 words)

MODEL ESSAY (ΠΑΡΑΔΕΙΓΜΑ)
People spend too much time and money on fashion. Do you agree or disagree?
Write an essay presenting and justifying your opinion. 150-180 words
Every season, the great fashion houses of Europe and America present their collections in the hope of persuading people to renew their wardrobes by purchasing the latest designs. In my opinion, one does not have to be a slave of fashion in order to look smart.
To start with, following the latest trends in fashion can be extremely expensive. This is especially true for those who buy costly designer clothing. There is also the risk of getting into debt in order to keep up with the latest fashions.
In addition to this, followers of fashion often give up their individuality for the sake of fashion. They choose clothes which suit neither their figures nor their personalities. This is unfortunate, as the way we dress should reflect who we really are.
On the other hand, some people argue that it is necessary to dress fashionably in order to create the correct image for their careers. This is particularly true of those who work with the public, as they reflect the image of their company. This does not mean that the latest fashions are the most appropriate, however. Simple but well-made clothes are almost always the best choice for business wear.
To conclude, I strongly believe that it is advisable to dress with style by choosing good quality clothes which suit you as an individual and have lasting elegance. As the famous designer Coco Chanel put it, “Fashion is made to become unfashionable.” So instead of changing your wardrobe constantly, isn’t it better to build up a collection of clothes which you can always wear?

Ex.15, page 60, Endangered Species,
Choose one of the following questions and prepare a short presentation for your
class. (Γράψε την απάντηση σε ένα από τα παρακάτω ερωτήματα στο τετράδιό σου)
1. What is the point in saving endangered species? (Why are scientists so concerned about species under extinction?)
You can get some ideas from these websites:
https://onekindplanet.org/save-endangered-animals/
https://simplyeducate.me/2014/05/23/reasons-why-we-should-save-endangered-species/
2. What can we do to protect endangered species?
You can get some ideas from the following websites and videos:
https://cultbox.co.uk/features/lists/5-ways-you-can-help-prevent-animal-extinction
SOME MORE USEFUL IDEAS:
1. What is the point in saving endangered species? (Why are scientists so concerned about species under extinction?)
- Every living organism has a functional value in the ecosystem (especially in the food chain) even if it is not apparent to humans.
- Moral obligation to preserve the natural world for future generations.
- Biodiversity (βιοποικιλότητα).
- Medicinal value (φαρμακευτική αξία).
2. What can we do to protect endangered species?
- Protect their habitat
- Reduce, reuse and recycle. Avoid using chemicals or plastic products that harm the environment
- Reduce your carbon footprint. Less CO2 means less global warming. Climate change is threatening wildlife habitats.
- Stop water pollution. Water pollution is killing animals in seas, lakes and rivers.
- Impose heavy fines or imprisonment on poachers.
- Never purchase products made from threatened species.
- Do not destroy habitats to build holiday resorts and hotels. Promote ecotourism.
- Educate ourselves and learn more
- Inform others.
Exercise.17, page 63, essay suggesting solutions to a problem
You have had a class discussion about wildlife species in danger of extinction. Your teacher has asked you to write an essay (120-150 words) for the school magazine to support your opinion about how we can protect endangered animals. Write about:
- pollution (e.g. not use plastic-it ends up in oceans, not waste energy/reduce our carbon footprint, less CO2 means less global warming. Climate change is threatening habitats. Water pollution is killing animals in sea, lakes, rivers, deforestation, etc.)
- hunting wild animals (heavy fines should be imposed on poachers. Not buy goods made from endangered species, etc.)
- your own ideas (e.g. should not destroy their habitats to build cities or hotels/resorts, etc., eco-tourism instead)
Essays suggesting solutions to a problem
Plan:
(Para 1) state issue (problem) and/or causes/state that there are solutions
(Para 2) 1st suggestion and possible result
(Para 3) 2nd suggestion and possible result
(Para 4) 3d suggestion and possible result
(Para 5) restate issue (problem)/give your opinion
USEFUL WORDS/PHRASES:
we should, we could, another suggestion would be, it would be a good idea, Firstly, moreover, However,In this way, By doing this, As a result, To sum up, To conclude, etc.
MODEL ESSAY:
You have had a class discussion about rubbish on the streets. Write an essay for your teacher suggesting ways that we can help to fight this problem and mentioning the possible results (150-180 words).
Nowadays, rubbish on the streets is a serious problem in many cities and towns. This is because many people are too careless or lazy to dispose of it responsibly. However, there are several solutions to the problem.
Firstly, we should try to recycle more. This way, we will reduce our rubbish and the streets will be much cleaner and tidier.
Moreover, we could pick up rubbish lying on the streets instead of ignoring it. By doing this, we set a good example for others and they will hopefully learn to do the same.
Another solution would be to create a local group for picking up rubbish in our neighbourhood. As a result, neighbourhoods would be kept in better condition.
To sum up, it is true that street rubbish is a problem in many areas. Nevertheless, I believe that if we all work together responsibly, we can make our neighbourhoods cleaner, better places to live in.
You will fInd tips on how to write an essay offering solutions to a problem in the document attached at the end of this unit
