Μάθημα

We meet once a week this year, to talk about civil and human rights, book burning and Shakespeare. 

We also talk about your final exams!

  • Περιεχόμενο μαθήματος

    We will be looking at units 6, 7, 8 and 9 this year.

    Units 6 and 7 will be mostly about civil and human rights. We'll talk about a famous photo taken during the Olympic Games of 1968, we'll read a poem, we'll get to know about the lives of famous civil rights activists and we'll also have a look at a speech.

    Unit 8 will be dystopian! We'll talk about auhtoritarian regimes and book burning, we'll have a look at a book (Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451) and we'll also get to know about negative space monuments.

    Finally, The Merchant of Venice we'll give us the opportunity to talk about prejudice and stereotypes.

    • To learn about civil rights movements and to talk about racism.
    • To discuss censorship and authoritarian regimes, read excerpts of books, discover negative space monuments.
    • To learn about Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice, to discuss the historical context, to talk about stereotypes and prejudice.

In the Civil Rights unit we will be looking at chapters 6 and 7 of the school book.

 

We will read the biographies of Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela and parts of their speeches. We will also be looking at a speech given by Barak Obama, we will watch a video of Martin Luther King’s acceptance speech for the Nobel Prize, in 1964, and we will talk about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

By the end of this unit, we will be able to read and analyse the poem "Harlem/ What Happens to a Dream Deferred" by Langston Hughes written in 1951 and, finally, discuss about the civil rights movement and the American dream.
